The three kinds at a glance
Everything lives under Admin → Appointments → Addons, which has three sub-tabs:
- Items (
/admin/appointments/addons/items) — a priced extra with an optional Duration in minutes that is added to the appointment. It does not need its own instructor or availability. - Groups (
/admin/appointments/addons/groups) — a named set of items with a Selection Mode that controls how many the customer may pick. - Classes (
/admin/appointments/addons/addon-classes) — an add-on service: a real appointment class booked alongside the main service, with its own duration and availability, scheduled Sequential (after the main class) or Parallel (at the same time).
Archived items, groups and add-on classes are excluded from every selection.
Add-on items — example: hot-stone upgrade
An add-on item has a Name, Price, Duration (minutes of extra time added to the appointment, leave 0 for none) and Location. Under Settings:
- Linking Mode — Standalone links the item straight to services through its own Classes pill; Part of Group means the item is offered only through the group it belongs to, and the group decides which classes see it.
- Scope — Per Booking is charged once per booking; Per Person is charged per attendee.
Example. A massage studio creates the item Hot-stone upgrade, Price 300, Duration 15, Scope Per Person, Linking Mode Standalone, and ticks Swedish massage and Deep tissue in its Classes pill. When a customer books a 60-minute Deep tissue for two people and ticks the upgrade, the hold becomes 75 minutes (plus buffers) and the add-on line is 2 × 300.
Add-on groups — example: aromatherapy scent
A group has a Name, Selection Mode, Scope, Location, the Classes it is offered on and the Addons (items) that belong to it. Selection modes:
- Single (Required) — the customer must pick exactly one.
- Single (Optional) — the customer picks one or None.
- Multiple — any combination, including none.
Scope works as for items: Per Booking charges the chosen options once, Per Person multiplies them by the number of attendees.
Example. The studio creates the items Lavender, Eucalyptus and Citrus (price 100 each, Duration 0, Linking Mode Part of Group), then the group Aromatherapy scent with Selection Mode Single (Optional), Scope Per Booking, and links it to every massage class. Customers see one block with the three scents plus None; picking one adds 100 to the booking regardless of how many people are coming.
Add-on classes (add-on services) — example: scalp treatment
An add-on class links a Main Class to an Addon Class — another appointment class that is booked together with the main one, either after it or at the same time. Fields:
- Price Override, Duration Override (minutes) and Points Override — optional; blank keeps the add-on class's own values.
- Scheduling — Sequential (the add-on class runs after the main class) or Parallel (runs at the same time). A Both option that lets the customer choose is not available yet.
- Use Buffer Times — shown for Sequential: apply the classes' Buffer time - Open / Close between and around the two sessions.
- Same Instructor — shown for Parallel: require the same instructor for both classes.
Example. The studio has a 20-minute class Scalp treatment, open for appointments. It creates an add-on class with Main Class Swedish massage, Addon Class Scalp treatment:
- With Scheduling: Parallel and Same Instructor off, a second therapist performs the scalp treatment during the massage. The time is only offered when a second connected instructor is free for those 20 minutes.
- With Scheduling: Sequential, the same therapist continues with the scalp treatment right after the massage, so the hold becomes 60 + 20 minutes (plus buffers when Use Buffer Times is on) and the therapist must be free for the whole block.
Sequential add-on classes always keep the same instructor. Parallel needs a second connected instructor who is free at the same time; with Same Instructor on, both classes are booked with the one instructor instead, so they must be classes that instructor can run together.
Which one to use
- Use an item for anything that only changes price or length — an upgrade, a product, extra minutes. Set Linking Mode Standalone when it is a yes/no tick on its own.
- Use a group when the customer must choose between options (scent, pressure, room type) or you want one None choice. Items inside a group use Linking Mode Part of Group and are linked to classes through the group, not individually.
- Use an add-on class when the extra needs its own time on a resource — a second therapist, a room, or an extra session the same instructor delivers afterwards — because only a real class takes part in the availability calculation.
You can combine them on one service: a Standalone item, a Single (Optional) group and a Sequential add-on class can all be offered on Swedish massage at once.
How customers see them
Add-ons are not a separate booking-flow step. After the service, instructor and date steps the customer picks a time, and the booking summary / review screen lists the attendee, pass or payment, equipment and all add-ons offered on that service: Standalone items as tick boxes, each group as its own block following its Selection Mode, and add-on classes as the business configured them (Sequential or Parallel — customers do not choose the scheduling). A Single (Required) group must be answered before the confirm button enables. Items or add-on classes with a duration lengthen the held time and must still fit the available window — a time that no longer fits is not offered. Per Person prices multiply by the number of attendees; Per Booking prices are charged once. The total updates live, and the add-on lines appear on the reservation and in checkout.
